Level: A2–B1
Lesson Type: Interesting Stories | Reading, Speaking & Discussion

Did you know that French fries probably didn’t come from France? This engaging lesson explores the surprising history behind one of the world’s favourite foods. Students discover how French fries may have originated in Belgium, why they became known as “French” fries, and how this popular snack spread around the world.

The lesson uses a short, easy-to-read story with practical vocabulary, comprehension questions, and plenty of opportunities for discussion. Rather than focusing on grammar, the aim is to build reading confidence, encourage conversation, and develop critical thinking through an interesting real-life topic.

PDF 1 includes a colourful reading passage, vocabulary activities, comprehension questions, and a fun “Did You Know?” section.

PDF 2 focuses on speaking and communication with discussion questions, pair work, a debate, role-play activities, and creative classroom tasks that encourage students to use the new vocabulary naturally.

This lesson works well with teenagers, university students, and adult learners. It can be used as a stand-alone reading lesson or as part of a unit on food, culture, travel, or surprising facts from around the world.
